Angle Cross-Section

This method is used for thin layers and enables the evaluation of layer thicknesses from approx. 0.5 µm.

By using a contra-angle handpiece, the sample is cut at an angle during the grinding process, this allows an enlargement of the physical light microscopic resolution. This makes the measurement and evaluation of coatings more precise.

The advantages of this processing method compared to a standard examination are

  • a more precise quality inspection of the sample at 1000x magnification with the light microscope
  • = no need to use the scanning electron microscope for coating thickness measurements
  • a reduced risk of breakout of layer particles
  • information on the structure of multilayer coatings or graded coatings
